Fed: Newman hands letter to Howard

Sources close to Family and Community Services Minister JOCELYN NEWMAN have confirmed
Senator NEWMAN has handed a letter to Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD -- possibly containing
her resignation.

The Tasmanian senator, Australia's most powerful woman, handed the letter over at 11am.

Speculation has been rife at recent days that Senator NEWMAN will resign following
the announcement of her welfare reform package last week.
